Five for Friday - 21st Feb 2014

www.doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com
It certainly has been a busy week! Here's  little snapshot into what happened:

1. Olympics Literacy Activity

I started using my Winter Sport Fun Literacy Pack this week. You can view a more detailed post here.

2. History Timelines

In Prep it is very difficult to explain the concept of timelines and past, present, future. So I have made this monthly timeline where I add photos of significant events in that month. We talk about it every week. I move the labels (past, present, future) along each time we change months.

3. Valentines

This is what my students did last week for Valentines (I forgot to upload a picture last week!).

We also made these books but I have no photos of them. Sorry!

4. Batty Lizards

My school recently purchased this puzzle. It is great for fine motor, visual learners, talking about shapes, tessellation - so many things! My students LOVE them!

5. Numicon

Another great resource our school has brought is Numicon. It is a numeracy resource kit. It comes as a whole pack with a teachers kit as well as a class kit. I borrowed these strips from another teacher with scanned images of the Numicon boards. The students had to match the piece to the picture, count and write.

Ahh, now to recover over the weekend!

Till next time,

Stay joyful!

Winter Olympics 2014

I am loving the Winter Olympics!

I love them mainly because I get to watch the figure skating. But, I recently started watching the Board Cross - wow talk about exciting!

My students are also a buzz with talk of the Olympics. Except for one who is adamant that, "I am not allowed to watch the 'lympics. It is only for grown ups". Which I think translates as: "It is on past my bedtime." :)

I made use of their interest to start the first page out of the Winter Sport Fun (trace, paste, draw) pack.

First we brainstormed what we knew about the Olympics. NO ONE knew what the Olympic Rings were so I started with that page!

After explaining the Rings, and their colours, the students traced the sentence, cut and glued it together and then drew the Olympic Rings.

I used the Trace, Paste, Draw  (Queensland Print) version of the pack as it is only the beginning of the year here in Australia. But, you could also use the Paste, Write, Draw.

Both packs contain the same set of sentences.

Hope you find them useful in your classroom too!

Five for Friday - 7th Feb 2014

www.doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com

Phew, I made it to Friday :) Let's just say it was one of those weeks where time didn't go fast enough! Despite the exhaustion - there are some good memories of this week. So, I'm linking up with DoodleBugs for a Five for Friday style look back.

1. Letter S craft

For the letter Ss this week we made Sailors in a submarine under the sea.

2. Letter A craft

We do two letters a week, so for the letter Aa, the students painted a wash over an apple to reveal a "hidden" message.

3. Re-organised the block shelf.

My students LOVE the blocks. I HATE the blocks due to the enormous time and effort (and many injuries) it takes to co-ordinate the pack up. So this week I told the students I would pack them up - they thought I'd gone crazy :) I was finally able to sort them into shelves properly and I took a photo and laminated it so that next time we can use it as a reference for where everything fits!

4. Got drawings from my 2013 preppies.

At our school the preps are in a fenced area, but our playground is right next to the Gr1-2. So my preppies from last year have been coming up to the fence and saying hi. I even got drawings from some girls. Made my day!

5. Valentines Activity planning.

I spent my non-contact time planning next weeks lessons. I then realised it is Valentine's Day next week. Luckily, I had made a valentines themed pack for TpT, so I quickly printed that out ready to use! I will also be doing this craft  but will be getting students to write the words themselves. Will post photos next week!

February Currently

It's February, which means time to link up with Farley!

Here goes:

Listening - I just got home from work, so the peace and quiet is beautiful!

Loving - Our puppy has taken to showing her love for us by running up and putting one paw over our legs and her head in our laps when we are sitting on the couch. Today it escalated to completely jumping on the couch and rolling straight over on her back to get a belly rub. She was soooo happy to see me :)

Thinking - For me, the school year started last week. I am still getting to know my new bright eyed Preppies.

Wanting - chocolate!!!! I love chocolate!!!

Needing - sleep. Goes hand in hand with it being the beginning of the school year :)

2 Truths and a Fib: I only have 3 coffee's a day (false - coffee gives me migraines!). The other two are true! P.S I love cucumber as much as I like chocolate. Is that weird?

Don't forget to link up too!

Till next time,

Stay joyful!
